Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatric Eye Exams

Booking an eye exam, especially for your little ones, often comes with a lot of questions. At A B See Optometry and Vision Therapy, we want to make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we get from parents and patients.

1. How do you check a child's eyes if they don't know their letters?

Great question! Many parents wonder how we determine a child's prescription if they can't read yet. The good news is that our expert pediatric eye doctors in Kelowna use specialized tools and techniques, such as retinoscopy, to assess vision without needing a verbal response. Even if your child doesn't know their letters, we can still get an accurate reading of their vision.

2. At what age should my child have their first eye exam?

We recommend scheduling your child's first eye exam at six months old. However, if you notice anything unusual about their eyes or vision, we encourage you to bring them in earlier. Early detection is key in preventing long-term vision issues. If your child has never had an eye exam, we would love to see them at any age for their first visit!

3. Can I bring multiple kids at the same time?

Absolutely! We love making our practice a welcoming space for families. Our kid-friendly optometry clinic includes a chalkboard wall, books, and toys to keep little ones entertained while they wait. Let us know when booking your appointment, so we can schedule accordingly. Bringing multiple kids at the same time often makes exams more efficient compared to separate visits.

4. Is parking free?

Yes! We get this question a lot. There is free parking available around the building off Richter Street for your convenience.

5. How long does an eye exam take?

From start to finish, including the gold standard dilation, you can expect to be at our clinic for about an hour. We take the time to conduct a thorough pediatric eye exam while keeping your visit efficient.

6. How do I know the cost of the exam?

We provide all pricing details over the phone when you book your appointment, and you can also find our eye exam fees listed on our website. Transparency is important to us, so we want you to feel confident knowing what to expect.

The BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) provides minimal coverage for eye exams. We are happy to direct bill to most extended health insurance plans for you!

7. Do I have to buy glasses from you?

You're welcome to purchase your glasses wherever you like. However, we offer the largest selection of kids' glasses in Kelowna and an unmatched extended warranty program. Plus, we have ongoing promotions, such as "buy the frame, get the lenses free", to help make eyewear more affordable. We're always happy to answer any questions you have about glasses!
