Common Vision Challenges in Children and How to Address Them

A woman and a girl are sitting on a chair in front of a monitor, smiling and looking at each other

Clear vision is essential for a child’s development, learning, and overall well-being. However, many children experience vision problems that can go unnoticed because they may not realize their eyesight is different from others. While adults can easily correct clarity issues with glasses, children’s vision is more complex, requiring early diagnosis and specialized care.

At A B See Optometry and Vision Therapy in Kelowna, we  share insights about common pediatric vision issues in our latest YouTube video to help parents understand common childhood vision problems and provide the best solutions for clear, healthy vision.

Common Vision Problems in Children

Myopia (Nearsightedness)

Myopia is one of the most common vision conditions in children, causing distant objects to appear blurry while close-up vision remains clear. Experts say that myopia is increasing at an alarming rate worldwide due to increased screen time and reduced outdoor activities. Myopia is a growing epidemic with studies showing that half of the world’s population is estimated to be myopic by 2050. If left untreated, high myopia can increase the risk of serious eye diseases later in life, such as retinal detachment and glaucoma.

Signs of Myopia in Children:

  • Squinting to see distant objects
  • Sitting too close to the TV or holding books very near
  • Difficulty seeing the board at school
  • Complaints of headaches or eye strain

Hyperopia (Farsightedness)

Hyperopia causes difficulty seeing nearby objects clearly while distant vision remains sharp. Unlike adults, some children with mild hyperopia may not experience noticeable symptoms because their eyes can compensate by working harder to focus. However, excessive strain can lead to headaches, eye fatigue, and difficulty with reading.

Signs of Hyperopia in Children:

  • Avoiding close-up tasks like reading or writing
  • Frequent eye rubbing
  • Holding books or screens at arm’s length
  • Complaints of headaches or tired eyes

Astigmatism

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea or lens has an irregular shape, leading to blurred or distorted vision at all distances. Children with astigmatism may struggle with both near and far vision, often mistaking letters or numbers while reading.

Signs of Astigmatism in Children:

  • Blurred or distorted vision at any distance
  • Frequent squinting or tilting the head to see clearly
  • Complaints of eye discomfort or headaches
  • Difficulty recognizing shapes, letters, or numbers
